Educating Students on the Farm

Deer Meadow Farms began hosting educational programs in 2011 and we have been refining our programs to provide the best possible experiences for students during their visit.  All Field Trips focus on providing education and context for students to learn and experience agriculture in a safe and positive way. From our Hands On approach to our Junior Farmer philosophy that 'everyone should plant & grow something', we have developed and pioneered one of the best school programs in MB.
There is definitely no better place to connect your students with their food source than the Farm!  Deer Meadow Farms is dedicated to educating students about the place the farm and agriculture has in supporting our very existence.

Spring 2025 K-6 Guided School Programs
Program Info & Curriculum Covered
K/Grade 1: Farm & Forest Walk
  • SLO: K-1-01-08
  • SLO: 1-1-05-07
  • SLO: 1-4-04, 09, 16
In addition to the farm, your Forest Walk through our 25 acre woods is the place to learn all about trees.  Discover the natural world where trees, plants, animals and seasons combine and work together to sustain life. With a focus on identifying trees and their parts, our nature walk is a learning experience. But be careful…you might get some ‘nature’ on you!
Grades 1 & 2:  Farm Animal Babies
  • SLO: 1-1-07-10, 14
  • SLO: 2-1-04, 07-10, 17
Spring always brings forth new life!  Get ‘hands on’ with our spring crop of farm animal babies. Learn about what we call the males and females of each type of farm animal.  Learn how each farm animal helps us live.  Why does the baby look like its mother? How do animals care for their young? What do animals need to survive? How do animals and humans help each other? We’ll tell you how.
Grade 3: Junior Farmer
  • SLO: 3-1-01, 02, 07, 12-15
  • SLO: 3-4-06,08-11
Every living thing on planet earth depends on 6 inches of topsoil and some H20!  Get hands on with our hugely popular Junior Farmer Program.  Students first will learn about soil and and seeds.  Students then will then move to the fields to get some hands on experience with planting.  They will also learn the difference between Farming & Foraging.

Grade 4
Home Grown Habitat
  • SLO: 4-1-01-04, 09-10, 13-16
Our 77 acre Farm has a 25 acre forest that is home to an abundance of wildlife and our 10 acre Wild Game Preserve is a great place to learn about Habitat.  Both plants and animals need places to live that support them and when those needs are met they find a suitable habitat - or living space - to thrive in.
Grade 5
Weather: Friend & Foe?
  • SLO: 5-4-01,02, 08, 09, 13, 16
Farmer's need good weather to grow crops to feed their animals and to feed humans.  Weather can either help or hinder our food supply, so weather is very important to both man and animals.  Learn how the sun, water and wind combine to create weather and climate. Learn about nature’s fury in storms and how bad weather can destroy valuable crops.
Grade 6
The Kingdoms:  Your Freinemy?
  • SLO: 6-1-02, 03, 06-09
Unlike the ‘B’ movie the title might suggest, we have a real story of killer snails right here at the farm. From the unseen parasite to what’s right under our noses, living things are everywhere and all have a place in our world. We’ll talk about animal kingdoms and help students build a farm based classification system that group them together.

Junior & Senior High
Older students have a wider variety of choices and a deeper level of understanding.  In addition to our basic farm program,  we have additional areas of instruction available for junior and senior high students that may be structured for your visit.  Some examples listed below are some examples of what we can do in areas of science and social studies.   Advanced curriculum available by request.

  • The Family Farm
  • Hybrids or GMO's
