Wild Game Preserve & Wagon Train

Picture
Our Wagon Train takes you through our Wild Game Preserve where you can spot our rescued herd of Fallow Deer.
Fallow Deer are native to Europe and have several color phases ranging from dark brown to spotted to white.  They are much smaller than our native White tailed deer and require additional support for our Manitoba winters.  Fallow Deer were introduced to Manitoba under farm licenses to be commercially farmed for venison during the BSE crisis (Mad cow disease) to meet market demands for an antibiotic and growth hormone free alternative to beef.  Unfortunately, the rebound of beef on the world market and the creation of ethical and grass fed beef has diminished the venison market and many of the producers have been unable to maintain their herds due to the high costs associated with fencing and high losses to predation.  We obtained a permit and have worked to rescue a small number of animals to be kept for educational purposes here at the farm.

Our Wild Game Preserve is used for educational purposes and creates a background for teaching students about habitats, eco-systems and food chains as well as the wild side of the animal world and how it differs from the domestic side.
